Hamentashen 2 Ways: Savory and Sweey
When the grandkids saw this contest they immediately said, “Bubbe, you are the best. You have to enter!” Getting as many kids involved I started with one grandson in Israel, Bentzy, who put together a survey and sent it out to decide what I should make. It was close but Hamentashen won out. I then I enlisted 2 grandsons finally in from Israel, to help make the savory Hamentashen. This recipe was added to the family seudas about 10 years ago because no one wanted to wait until dessert! They are a take on chili tacos but in a Hamentashen dough (less sugar) and shape. I then traveled to Teaneck NJ to get more kids baking. Aliza, age 5 and Dovi, age 2 did the rolling, filling, and shaping after big brother Binny mixed the ingredients. 2 sticks of margarine, 2 cups sugar, 2 eggs, 1 tsp salt, 2 tsp baking powder, 1 TB lemon juice, and 1 tsp vanilla.
after chilling the dough for 20 minutes, we rolled out the dough and filled the sweet hamentashen with jam, sprinkles, and/or chocolate chips. It’s great because the 2 year old can easily fill the dough and helps with the pinching. Bake at 375 for 15-17 minutes. To put the video together, I went up to Stamford CT where 9 year old Abby put the video together with me! Good thing kids know technology!
as this was going on, other grandkids were zooming in to watch from Modiin, Teaneck, and Stamford. Some of the resulting cookies were sent to our grandkids in Israel so that they could taste the finished product as well!
This process of baking has traveled all over, not just the US but during COVID we all baked together on Zoom! And during my mother-in-laws last months she asked for my hamentashen so offer. That I made multiple batches from January until Yom Haatzmaut when she was nifter, bring 2-3 hamentashen as a special treat each day. These hamentashen are not just a fun cookie to eat; they bring up so many memories and stories that our family has shared, connections between Bubbe and the grandchildren, and new memories that we hope to create with the next generation, iyh!
