MyKosher Recipe Contest: FAQ

Q. What do you mean by “signature dish”?

A: Your signature dish is something that has your special fingerprint on it. It is a dish you developed on your own. It either happened as a result of an ‘aha’ moment in the kitchen, or a comedy of errors that resulted in something amazing.

Either way, that dish is now your signature! It might be the dish that you are known for, and therefore bring it to family/friends affairs.

Q: Do the submitted recipes for the contest need to be really special or extravagant?

A: Not at all! We cannot stress enough that this contest is for everyone. Truly. You can submit any of your signature recipes. It does not need to be fancy. It can be your spin on nutty buddies. Or even a unique salad dressing that combines two unexpected ingredients. We want to see recipes from your point of view.

Q: Do the pictures need to look professional?

A: No, we are just looking for solid recipes with appealing pictures. It doesn’t have to be professionally styled like a magazine.

The goal is to make the food look tasty, like something we’d want to make- and eat!

Here’s a few quick tips:

  • Make sure your lighting is strong enough so the picture is not dark.

  • Use one light source that’s pointing in a direction that keeps the shadows going where you want them to (for example, if the light is behind you, shadows of you holding your camera create a dark spot in the middle of your food!).

  • Arrange the food on the plate or pot in an attractive way (don’t just pile it on at random). We hate to make you wash more dishes, but disposable pans and plates often don’t look too nice….

  • If the food is something with a filling, like an empanada, show some complete ones and take a slice or bite off one so you can show the filling and people can see what’s inside.

  • Using a sprig of greenery or herbs can brighten up a recipe that’s a dark color.

  • Use a contrasting background to make the food pop. Textures like a kitchen towel or other props with an interesting pattern can add interest.

  • Don’t zoom in too closely on the food! It usually doesn’t look great if the food fills the whole frame. You want to show how you’ve plated it.

Q: Can I submit more than one recipe?

A: Absolutely. There are no limits on number of entries per person.

Q: Are we only allowed to submit recipes that we invented, or can we submit a recipe that we’ve had from family, friends etc, that is not featured in a cookbook or magazine?

A: The recipe you submit has to be an original creation, meaning something about it has to be your own creation. If you adapted a recipe from somewhere else, it has to be a strong enough change that makes the new recipe unique and special to you.

Q: How different does the signature recipe need to be from any previously-published recipes?

A: The guidelines for submission require that it is an original recipe. If you took inspiration from an outside source, your tweaks must be significant enough that it does not feel similar to the original recipe in any way. We take this very seriously. It can also be an old family recipe that hasn’t been published elsewhere.

Q: I have a recipe that I got from my friend but I tweaked it to my own liking- can I use it?

A: See above. The difference must be the make-it-or-break-it factor, that makes the recipe feel significantly different from the original.

Q: Will my name be publicized if I submit a recipe? Can I remain anonymous?

A: All winner names will be publicized. If you’d like to remain more anonymous you can submit your recipe with your first name and last initial.

Q: How many winners will there be?

A: Three. 1st place is $2000 cash, 2nd place is $1000 Cash and 3rd place is a Japanese Knife. Other runner up recipes may be featured on kosher.com after the contest.

Q: How do you choose a winner?

A: We are looking for original recipes with clear instructions and measurements, that show creativity, deliciousness, and an appealing picture. To choose the winners, first, our staff recipe editors will read through all the submissions and rank them. We will make the top recipes in order to test them and make sure they live up to expectations. A panel of our staff and some of our top chefs will taste and rate each dish, in order to choose the winners.

Q: Can I submit an old family recipe?

A: Yes, as long as you can trace it back and make sure it is in fact a family recipe, then you can submit it.

Q: Are you allowed to get a picture from online?

A: No, the picture must be one that you photographed yourself. (It’s ok if your friend helps you, of course!)

Technical issues:

Q: My images won’t upload.

A: Make sure your image is in one of these formats: jpg, jpeg, or png; and is no larger than 2MB.

Q: I want to change something in my entry that I already submitted. Can I?

A: Please email us at hello@kosher.com for assistance.
